Previous Winners Jim Fox won the summer, 2009 contest for two Air France Airline tickets. His winning contest is titled “"Polka Dots & Sunshine Teardrop,"and can be read on our website. Jim Fox is a husband, father, former scoutmaster, and currently a volunteer canoe guide for the State Parks system. He still works for food, but his experiences in the mountains and along the streams and rivers of California are often the basis for his short stories and poems. Usually writing in the creative non-fiction genre, he has recently delved into fiction. Eleven of Jim’s short-short stories have been published in various periodicals. His haiku "wings" was published and later chosen to introduce "The Written Word" exhibits at the 2005 Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival. His one lament is that the late Andy Warhol promised us all a few minutes of fame; fortune would have been better. Maris L. Franco, the winner of the first Thin Threads contest in 2008-2009 for her story entitled “The Tip,” received a $500 cash prize, and a matching $500 award was sent the author’s cause of choice, The Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey. Her story appears in the current release of the first Thin Threads Anthology. Maris holds a degree in Psychology, but became disillusioned with some aspects of the profession and thus never pursued it further. Currently, she works for a heavy construction firm (tunnels, bridges, etc.) managing the office. She handles everything from correspondence and insurance claims, to travel arrangement and event planning. She has always seen herself as a writer, as it has been a lifelong passion. It has only been in the past 2 years that she became serious about pursuing this field professionally, and now feels determined to do so. This career path is truly the only one she sees herself on, as writing (simple as it may sound) makes her happy.
