LOUISE

Louise was very good in sciences, and was studying to be a pharmacist.  Her career path was well established as she inherited her father's desire to be successful and financially comfortable.  She was destined to marry a student of medicine, a boy she had known since high school.

Everything changed for her one day, though, when she joined her family at their cottage deep in the woods.  The location was so remote in fact that they had to board a boat to get to the desolate island.  On the third day of her stay, she wandered a little too far into the forest, and came face to face with a bear.  She froze, and saw her life flash before her eyes.  In her panic, she forgot everything she had been told about how to deal with such an encounter, and was convinced that she would be mauled to death.  With her eyes closed, she heard the tremendous roar of the beast, and she blacked out.

When she regained consciousness, she was lying on the ground and the bear was nowhere in sight.  Instead of running, she just sat there, void of all emotions.  Then she began to see in her mind's eye what her life had been about until then.  But more importantly, she saw what her future life should be like.  There was no pharmacy in that future… no high school sweetheart become her husband... no plush and comfy house to call home… Instead, she saw the life of a social worker ministering to the less favored… to children in particular.  Slowly walking back to the cottage, she wondered how she would break the news to her family.  Her decision had obviously been made.

Upon her return to the city, she left pharmacy school to register in social work instead.  And she left her boyfriend/fiancée.  Today, Louise is head of a social work non-profit organization that focuses on the health and well being of children, and she is as happy as can be with her new husband, a social worker as well.
